A Greater #coucal (Centropus sinensis) made a rare visit to my backyard some weeks ago. I was quite fortunate to capture this bird almost hiding in the small shrubs. It made a silent walkout later on, so I was quite fortunate enough to see it. The #GreaterCoucal or the #CrowPheasant (#CentropusSinensis), is quite uncommon in my backyard, but it is a common bird of the Indian subcontinent. You will find the details and my observational remarks about these birds below. Bird Information: Name: Greater Coucal. Binomial name: Centropus sinensis Other names: crow pheasant (for local names, see below). Conservation Status (IUCN): Least Concern (IUCN 3.1). Habitat range: Indian subcontinent. Shot at area/ Location: Howrah, West Bengal, India Name in other languages: (I will update this section later). My further notes and observations: Once the greater coucals were quite common in my area and even at my backyard, but in last 10-15 years they have become a rarity. Though they are still found in well tree covered areas. These bird loves the ground and preferably grassy/ bushy terrain. They would be often seen walking, as you may can here.
