Join the premium course to unlock more lessons, assignments, and longer critiques - https://proko.com/drawing Establishing proportions is a common mind numbing challenge artists struggle with when drawing from reference. When we draw we’re usually using a combination of eyeballing and measuring, but if you don’t know how to train in these two areas, you’ll continue to get whacky proportions. This lesson will help train your mind to improve your accuracy, show you tools you can use to help you judge proportions and the skill set to give yourself quick feedback so you can improve faster. 00:00 - Intro 01:34 - Measuring 02:26 - Sighting 03:31 - Plumb Lines 04:12 - Angles 04:45 - Units 05:31 - Straights 05:58 - Negative Shapes 07:00 - Big to Small 08:30 - The Small Stuff 09:53 - Self Critique 11:28 - Outro Related Lessons Drawing Measuring Techniques - /watch/kPAf4pKntZtnf #drawingbasics #drawingprocess #measuringadrawing Subscribe to Proko: http://bit.ly/SubProko Don't miss new tutorials - Hit the BELL! @John315قبل 7 أشهر I did two years of art school, paid thousands of Euros from 2002 to 2004, but my teachers tought NOTHING of what you teach. I remember my cartoon animation id="hidden3" class="buttons"> teacher, saying "start with rough sketches. Don't do the final sketch from the start". That was the ONLY advice he gave us and he kept repeating that, thinking that we, the absolute amateurs would become pros with that single advice. Now, in 2023, you teach EVERY F*NG THING they should have tought us back then, for free and in a few minutes. Not in two years time. How to draw perfect lines, how to define shapes, giving examples by you actually drawing something (they never did that), etc. Exactly what they SHOULD have tought us back then. A thank you is barely enough, man. ....وسعت 14

@Anastasiabrunoقبل 8 أشهر I am an art student at the academy and I've done 1 year of life drawing with both two male models and two female models.
My teacher actually id="hidden9" class="buttons"> never taught us how to do the Loomis method, the anatomy etc but just DRAWING because the goal was mainly to be quicker.
As a person who has been drawing for her whole life I did both still life and life drawing classes and in artistic high school they taught us how to take proportions. But NEVER anatomy.
So.I practiced a lot of drawing in highschool and I improved a lot.
As a person who has been also selft taught I've already used all of the methods that you listed, which are AMAZING.
But when I went to the academy yes, they taught beginners how to do that, but to a person like me, who really wanted to add that more spice to the drawing, I would get critique but most of the time my drawing was right, the teacher told me that my only problem was positioning the subject in the center of the paper.
But the proportions and everything were 90% of the time Right.
Idk, I still want to improve my quickness in taking proportions and likeness, when I am at the anatomy class, my drawing is not how I want it, even though my teacher always tells me that it's good.
Idk, I don't feel like I have a high level of accuracy and quickness in my drawing skills.
I get accuracy just with A LOT OF TIME on the drawing (it also depends on the days..)
I don't even know what kind of level I have, where should I look at to improve my skills even more.
I even had some students coming up to me asking to correct their own drawing and i would always tell them that im not good enough to do that. But they would really trust my critique????
Idk i want to improve, but i dont know how???

@gundarsmiks4889قبل 7 أشهر Finaly someone who is talking about something he actualy uses in his work.
Jeez. There is so many youtubers barely starting something, and already id="hidden11" class="buttons"> teaching everybody how to do it.
I also use just pencil and paper for measuring an sketching. plus ruler!!! Because i draw architecture, and straight lines look much better with drawn with ruler. Also perspective line drawing is so much simpler with a ruler. but thats it. Pencil, paper, ruler.
It takes years to actualy become good at these things.
And you know. Going gradualy deeper and deeper into understanding stuff. i kinda actualy end up not using more than half of the stuff i buy, and experiment with for drawing. but in the end of the day it somehow it makes sense and gives exp. And narrows down to something.

@gameisover8309قبل 4 أشهر For yeara i did the measurement method just for instinct. Comparing proportions of somepart of the face to other parts of the body. Or trying to copy the id="hidden14" class="buttons"> angle without a ruler just with my pencil. Thats how i draw my first "realism" portrait. Combining the unit method.
Now i discover the pumbleline method thanks you

@Eternal-ReTuningقبل 9 أشهر Gonna save this on in my tutorial playlist. Such a valuable summary for all inspiring artists.
Over the years I find myself becoming too dependent id="hidden23" class="buttons"> on screens display for my measuring process (page edges, vertical angles and negative spaces are cheated there).
Drawing from life is truly where the best improvements can be made since you will have to figure out everything from the composition and don't get stuck on specific tools.
Checking proportions on the scanned images is very easy to correct mistakes and to growth your observation skills but it is also important to build confidence to not depend on it and aim master the observation skills.
This can free you from any constrain of size format, improve line efficiency and confidence.

@davirosaقبل 9 أشهر Hey Proko, whatsup? Thank you for the kind tips and techniques! They are handy!!
I have a question about proportions and I think you have being id="hidden25" class="buttons"> there before.
When I draw loose and with no compromise, the vibrancy of the strokes pops - but sometimes it lacks proportions, and things out of alignment.
But, sometimes when I want to pursuit a true likeness (lots of measurements) - the result is stiff and many times I leave them cause I feel I will not be able to bring them to life.
I draw with charcoal pencil (loooong tip) and newsprint paper.
So, my question is: How to balance the vibrancy of a loose and relaxed joy drawing - with something stricketed like a super fine likeness? Or how to achieve a loose brushwork on such restricted lay in?
Thank you in advanced and many hugs from Brazil!!
