Cyprus Shipwreck Orphourous in Paphos IT IS SIXTEEN YEARS since became lodged on rocks off the coast of Paphos and despite being battered by the elements, she still remains an iconic part of the western seascape. The boat has long been a tourist and photographer’s favourite as she shimmers in the clear waters. After becoming stuck on the rocks, the ship was stripped of anything useful and left to rot, it has been described as "A piece of history frozen in time.” She has stood upright on a stone-bank for 16-years and can cast an eerie image at sunset. The vessel ran aground in March 1998 in heavy seas, during a voyage from Greece to Syria with a cargo of lumber and it is predicted that it will gradually keel over and be almost completely submerged by the end of this decade. At the time of the accident, the ship had a crew of eight who were all rescued. It was subsequently confirmed in the Lloyd's List that the competency certificates for the Greek Captain and the Pakistani first officer were forgeries. Several plans to sink the ship in recent years did not prove popular with everyone, as residents and visitors appear to have established a deep connection to the vessel. However, experts said the ship is dangerous due to severe deterioration and a plan to sink her to form a scuba dive attraction was considered too risky.
