We spend a third of our lives asleep. Every organism on Earth—from rats to dolphins to fruit flies to microorganisms—relies on sleep for its survival, yet science is still wrestling with a fundamental question: Why does sleep exist? During Shakespeare and Cervantes' time, sleep was likened to death, with body and mind falling into a deep stillness before resurrecting each new day. In reality, sleep is a flurry of action. Trillions of neurons light up. The endocrine system kicks into overdrive. The bloodstream is flooded with a potent cocktail of critically vital hormones. Such vibrant activity begs the question: Where do we go when we go to sleep? Based on new sleep research, there are tantalizing signposts. We delved into the one-eyed, half-brained sleep of some animals; eavesdropped on dreams to understand their cognitive significance; and investigated extreme and bizarre sleeping behaviors like “sleep sex” and “sleep violence.”

@toneshalay6196منذ 4 سنواتI was in a coma for a while and I gotta say, "My brain NEVER cut off," during that time. Although, I felt like I was in the most relaxed state, id="hidden5" class="buttons"> and I could not open my eyes, no matter how hard I tried. I could hear everything and everyone that was near me. I wanted to come out the coma and let everyone that was concerned or cared about me, that my road to recovery might be long but I was going to survive and eventually thrive. There was this inner struggle, within myself, to try harder to come out of the coma, immediately, for others, more than for myself. The more I tried to fight harder to come out of that coma, I got more and more tired, BUT MY MIND N-E-V-E-R CUT OFF!!! I don't come from a religious background. From what I heard when I was in a coma was people were depending on me to pull through the coma, and I didn't want to let them down. At that moment I actually felt loved and important, so I continued to fight, but I had to take a different approach, so I wouldn't over exhaust myself and/or, possibly die. I started praying. I said, GOD, if you get me through this I will serve you for the rest of my life, and I surrendered all to GOD. After I did that I felt light. I didn't have that tired feeling I had before. I was totally at PEACE!!! In the passing days my condition continued to improve, I could hear the doctors reports, while I was in the COMA!!! EVENTUALLY, GOD BROUGHT ME OUT OF THE COMA! I often say, "Be careful what you say in the presence of someone in a coma, especially negative stuff, because they probably can hear every word you are saying." On the other hand. I LOVE TO SLEEP. Sleep does a lot of good for me, mostly, it makes me feel rejuvenated. If I get what most people would consider too much sleep, THAT'S NOT A PROBLEM FOR ME, in fact, I'm a happy camper. If I don't get enough sleep I start to come out of my element. I can't help but wonder if the brain only cuts off during/after death! ....وسعت467

@robert_costelloمنذ 3 سنواتI recently had a dream reveal something to me, as to why does all life on this planet need to sleep. I understand it was a dream, but it all made so much id="hidden7" class="buttons"> sense and, I was crying hysterically when I woke. It’s impossible for me to put into words exactly what I thought was revealed to me. One thing, above all others, so painfully obvious. Time. no such thing exists. Upon wakening, I kept repeating to myself. Saying, “there is no time”. How did we all get it so wrong. How did we miss this. I’ve been asking this question for a little over a decade. No one was able to answer, and it seems that no one can answer this question. I seen that we leave our bodies every time we sleep. It was like instantly, and painlessly, crossing through an Einstein Rosen bridge, more or less. It seemed that out of our bodies, mostly our head, these extremely tiny traces of light come out of us as soon as we hit a REM cycle. These little lights began to follow an orbital pattern about the size of that of Jupiter orbiting the Sun, if not larger. This happens to all known life in order to help propel a much larger system. It is when we sleep that we transfer energy. This energy is needed on the other side, as much as it is needed on earth. I understood that we were not the only ones contributing. I could see energy coming from many different places and directions. Most of this energy came in similar light patterns. It was not frightening, but familiar. I instantly understood that this must be done. Every photon of light understood this. Every individual gives what is needed. It’s not a form of payment nor slavery, not at all. I learned that it has always been this way. Like the ultimate symbiotic relationship. Our sleep powers the rest of this system, if you will. It seemed obvious why animals sleep and hibernate, even though it puts them at an evolutionary disadvantage. I began to understand that our lives on this planet are temporary. Not only that, but I understood that each and every person is here voluntarily. I began crying after realizing how cruel we are to one another. I learned that every negative thing we’ve ever told anyone, shaped and formed them. Without looking, or touching, I understood how hurtful I have been. My preoccupations with finances and other vain possessions. It was never meant to be this way. I realized that I wanted to help. It wasn’t labor intensive, but needed and we were all obliged and wanted to take part. Maybe like our contribution to something far greater. I also realized that the other side also contributes to our benefit, in one way or another. I understood that the food we eat and share with one another, helps build this energy that is needed. I couldn’t understand why was there such a strong emphasis on sharing food with loved ones. I also knew that food is something from this life and not universal. I know this sounds stupid, but it was the way. My entire body wept. understanding that our differences and anger consume all of our hearts and minds. I felt burdened with guilt knowing that it was never meant to be this way. We were never meant to fight over the dumbest reasons. I understood that money is nothing more than an illusion created by those who seek to destroy us and themselves. I remember feeling connected to every life that has ever existed. I had this feeling deep inside. a feeling of no hate. I don’t know how to explain it. There was no anger or jealousy. I did not want for anything. I didn’t want to wake from my dream. When I finally woke, I kept my eyes closed as I cried. I knew that when I open my eyes, I’m going to be back in this hateful world we created. I had this strong feeling that I would return to whatever that was. I understood that it doesn’t come right after death. I understood that there were many more processes we go through as individuals, and collectively. We all have to do these things in order for everyone to exist. It all had to do with the transfer of energy, from one world to the next. I know this sounds like a bunch of baloney, but whoever reads this, and I hope many people do, let us try to do better. A smile and a handshake means more to another person than any gift or money you can give them. our time here on earth is but a step that must take place. We are moving to something far greater than any words can describe. I hope you remember these words because you will feel them when we leave. I love you all. I don’t care if you laugh at me or comment mean things. I truly love all of you. FYI, I have never spoken words like this to a random account knowing that strangers can read these words. This is not me, nor have I ever been that type of person. But I can say with certainty that is the person I want to be. I’m going to try my best to be a better father, brother, friend. ....وسعت64

@E-Katمنذ 3 سنواتI had a lucid dream where I was walking on a beach with a person I wasn't allowed to look at. He said that when we dream, we really go to that place id="hidden28" class="buttons"> we dream about. This beach and the sea were extremely real, more realistic than our reality. After a long talk given to me by this man, I was told that if I think of a place I want to go, I'll be transported there very quickly, upwards. Silly me, I thought of home ( but really didn't wanted to go yet!!) and instantly, I felt being pulled upwards!! The shells I had in my hand, were changing from solid to liquid like and I felt them sipping through the space between my fingers during the acceleration! This all had happened so quickly, but I had enough time to marvel how amazing it felt to be subjected to this force, I suppose like on some fast fairground ride but probably faster. When I woke up I had my hands still closed, as I tried so much to hold on those shells, to bring a survener for my family. I could feel and see an bluish imprint on my hands, corresponding to the pattern of the sharp, poking bits on these shells. I wish I were allowed to remember everything the man had said to me about dreams, but he said I won't be allowed to remember it. So what was the point even telling me this, I keep asking myself? I remember this dream so well although it took place many years ago. Thank you for reading my rather clumsy report. ....وسعت4

Something was preventing me from surfacing to the air pocket under the dock so I pushed through the obstacle in my dream. I think you know what was next - yes, I forced my way through the screen and out the window. That wasn't the weirdest part of this story. I fell about 12 feet down onto a picnic table. Amazingly, hitting the table didn't wake me up but I remember pain (noting more than bruised ribs) in the dream and others in the cabin heard me yell out. @StephiSensei26منذ 3 سنواتHighly interesting discussion. This would seem to bring into question, what it means to be a conscious being. And then one step further, what it means id="hidden33" class="buttons"> to exist. Why, are we experiencing all of this related and unrelated information? What purpose does that serve? What question is the mind / brain trying to unravel? What are we trying to explain to ourselves? The brain, for lack of better terminology, is a mechanism of the body. The mind is not. At this level we are already a divided being. Half in the physical world and half in the metaphysical world. And there it is, the burning question, "What is the purpose of that?". Homework, for the rest of our lives. ....وسعت2

@danielmartin5440منذ 3 سنواتOMG! I have some serious sleep disorders and he explained EXACTLY what I've been experiencing for about the last 5 years or so. I'll be working id="hidden35" class="buttons"> on my computer and lose focus and start to daydream and then the daydream will become more real until I nod off into sleep and it becomes a full-fledged dream. When my head falls, I wake up at different points during that process and I've noticed how sometimes it's just a very focused daydream, other times it's more realistic and it "transitions" into a full fledged dream if I fall fully asleep. But I've seen the whole process at many stages along the way. The weird thing though is that even at the "daydream" stage, they seem to be totally random. Nothing like what I would consciously daydream about. Sometimes it's even difficult to remember if it was real or not when I think about it later. Sometimes it's entirely verbal too, not necessarily visual or experiential. Those are the really short ones when I'm really, really tired and they only last long enough to hear a word or two. But when I "hear" them, after I wake up, I get the sense that I didn't actually "hear" it but that it was a "memory" that was created entirely in my brain of having heard something. I can't explain it. It just doesn't contain all the components of an actual memory. ....وسعت1

@memeagain3429منذ 3 سنواتI don't dream that often, but when I do dream I don't like it. Sometimes it's nothing and then sometimes it's critical, but no mater the id="hidden39" class="buttons"> dream I have within a year it always becomes reality. At first sometimes I don't realize until something triggers me in real life to think I've done or seen this before. It's hard to describe but that's why I hate dreaming. ....وسعت1

@loristrachan8633منذ 9 سنواتWhen I as younger, I endured a horrible marriage/family situation that was impossible to deal with. I dreamt one time, that I was being chased by vicious dogs, and escaped them by making my way up a tall ladder. As I got to the top, there was a snake, ready to strike. I felt so cornered, I grabbed the snake by its tail and slew the dogs with it. That was the most victorious and memorable dream in which I believed pertained significantly to the emotional upheavals I was living! ....وسعت76

@Colhogan06منذ 3 سنواتThis in a way provides some insight on the 2nd Dr's question regarding taking what we dreamed and having it change what we do when awake. I was just id="hidden46" class="buttons"> stationed in Germany when I was in the Army, and needed to hook up 2 VCR's to a TV in such a way that one would work as the TV tuner and the other was connected so I could copy tapes from one VCR to another while watching it, or just simply record the TV. This seems like it would be easy for any audio video geek. But because of everything I specifically wanted the setup to do, it had to be hooked up in a very specific way and order. If it wasn't, I may get it to do one thing but not the others and there were a few different functions I needed it to do. Anyway to make a long story short, I spent all day trying to remember how I had previously set it up, because it had been a long time since I had originally set it up before. It got late so I went to bed and figured I would try again the next day. During the night I had a dream of how I had set everything up before moving to Germany. I woke up at like 3am just after the dream. I figured I better do this right away just in case I forget. So at 3am I went out to the living room and began replicating what I had done in my dream. I do not know how it happened but after it was done it worked! My wife woke up while I was doing it and she thought I was nuts, but I explained to her about the dream but she still had doubts it would work, until I turned it on and everything worked 100%! We were both stunned. At any rate this is an example of taking what I dreamed and using it in my real life. It was incredible!! ....وسعت

@alanstarkie2001منذ 3 سنواتI quite like the idea that we live in some kind of simulation or constructed reality. I'm open to this idea. Who knows? When we dream, we are truly id="hidden47" class="buttons"> in an elaborate simulated environment. As a lifelong natural lucid dreamer, I often take time to observe my oneiric environment and I'm amazed that very odd things occur in dreams, yet most of the time, everything seems perfectly normal and not out of the ordinary. ....وسعت2

Dogs and cats sleep a lot.

Studying sleep science might be the secret to all human contentment. 1
I love my dreams, Ive also be trying different sound frequencies while I sleep to induce lucid dreams. 22
I think sleep is to rest parts of the brain, but other parts are still awake to go on some fantasy conscious experience.
Grateful to these scientists ❤❤❤ 1
lucidvivid dreamer and I love my dreams, the goods and the bads they're all vivid and beautiful. 3After a long talk given to me by this man, I was told that if I think of a place I want to go, I'll be transported there very quickly, upwards.
Thank you for reading my rather clumsy report. ....وسعت 4
A realm for our energy while our id="hidden29" class="buttons"> physical body regenerates.
Where time does not exist.
That dream that one day gives you dejavu because you glimpsed the future. That feeling of having had been in that place before even though you know you were not in that place before, but you were in your dream 3 years ago. but you only vaguely remember that after the fact and then brush it off as nonsense.
Food for thought ....وسعت 60
