What's up guys, it's Amanda. What I'm about to talk about is probably going to rile up a few people as I know the British hate when Americans remake their TV shows… we've done it quite a few times, sometimes it worked out, and others were a disaster!   I'll be going through some of the most popular British TV shows and giving my opinion on who did it best. Let me know what you think in the comments! Follow me on social media :) www.instagram.com/ladyraeuk/

@briwire1383 years ago The US and UK offices are different. The US one is a comedy set in an office, the UK one is a spoof documentary set in an office. 61

@ffxiprincess4113 years ago I kind of hate to admit that as an American I haven't watched ANY of the US versions of these shows, only the UK versions. I prefer more of a dry humor and find most US shows overly fake and polished. 122

@GenericGooner3 years ago The weirdest situation with regards to remakes is the U.K. had a show called ‘coupling’ which was a soft remake of ‘friends’ for a U.K. audience. They didn’t just do a carbon copy but instead brought the basic platform of 3 girls and 3 guys in their late 20s to early 30s and provided British scenarios and humour to their interactions and relationships...
And the USA attempted to make a remake of it! So a remake of a show that was a remake of a show they already had... and unsurprisingly it failed.

@ramahpalmer70893 years ago The UK Office ended so perfectly though with the Christmas special, I wouldn't want it to have an extra 7 seasons or whatever like the US. It was perfect. 27

@peckelhaze69343 years ago I have never watched these, excluding Fawlty Towers which is near perfection, so cannot really comment. I have to say that I am watching a rerun of M.A.S.H. and thank goodness no one has done a remake. M.A.S.H. characters cannot be matched, it is near perfection and I still love it. ... 14

@Alcagaur13 years ago "The Office" is perhaps the ultimate exemplar of U.S. networks need to wring every possible episode out of any popular series, thereby strip-mining and despoiling the core concept. 11

@chrisglover19783 years ago I've never seen the US version of Coupling, but it didn't last beyond the first season. The UK version was hilarious 13

@neilrock73863 years ago Being a brit, I couldn’t get going with the US versions of The Office or Shameless. The Office in the UK was a fake documentary style rather than a comedy, it was as awkward and cringey as it was trying to be funny, which actually made it overall funnier. It’s the subtlety of the comedy rather than the one liners.
Shameless UK was filmed low budget but that added to the grime of the production. The Hollywood glow of the US one was too much of a stretch to make it believable over here IMO. While Trailer Park Boys is Canadian, it actually pulls off the Shameless genre better!
The reason a lot of remakes do not work is in the subtlety and nuisances of UK comedy, which when they are remade, seem to be more in your face or over explained to the point of not being funny. Can think of loads of US shows too that are hilarious (Brooklyn 99) when they stick to their US roots but equally those shows wouldn’t translate for British TV either, so it works both ways.

@maximiliandegarnerinvonmon64573 years ago One thing about the Office. It used completely unknown actors (they are well known now but were nobodies then including Ricky) and that was what made it even funnier as we actually thought it was a documentary at the start and was so relatable to many of us working in those times. The US version is just a comedy show with very famous actors. Therefore, i would not even say they are the same program for that reason. ...

@kenowens13753 years ago There were some older ones that you are too young to remember such as “Steptoe and Son” (Sanford and Son) and “Till death do we part” (All in the family) which I never think work due to humour being different in the UK and US. @robharris8844U3 years ago I was shocked how bad the US version of Red Dwarf turned out. @jonathanaikman22853 years ago The Americans also 'remade' Get Carter, The Wicker Man and The Italian Job. Some things are too sacred to be messed with. Also, the Americans do not speak English, they speak American English which is very different so a remake will be produced to cater to a US audience. Things like the double entendre, Cockney rhyming slang and many of our swear words would simply not be understood in the States so a comedian like Ken Dodd or the Carry On films or Only Fools and Horses would not go down so well there because many of the nuances would be missed. ... 3

@Ghost110103 years ago I was worried you weren't going to mention IT Crowd, but you did at the end. It is among my top favourites. So, I have to admit that I haven't seen some UK versions of some shows. I've seen a little of the UK's Hells Kitchen, The Office, and a bit more of Whose Line. I've been a Gordon Ramsay fan for years now and I feel both stressed and entertained by the drama of the US Hells Kitchen. I also agree with your points on the US Whose Line and The Office, though I can't compare the US to the UK Office since I've seen like a couple clips from the UK version. Now for some of my top favourites. I'm so glad you brought up Fawlty Towers. John Cleese is a comedy genius indeed, which is why I loved that show so much. It did however stress the hell out of me, especially some of the guests staying at the hotel, and of course Basil Fawlty himself. I mean he can conjure up elaborate and completely absurd ways of hiding truths, which often cause more chaos. There are just some shows that shouldn't be replicated, and this is one of them. It's perfect. The IT Crowd is another in my opinion. I've definitely saved some quotes in my mind from some of the characters, especially Moss. Moss: "It's smarties cereal." Jen: "I didn't know they made smarties cereal." Moss: "They don't. It's just a bowl of smarties with milk." And yes I did try making that last year just for the hell of it. As weird as it can be sometimes, it's what makes it the show it is, and I love it. I didn't even know there was a US version for the longest time, but now I know why. If there is an episode I can watch, I haven't found one yet. Finally, I'll bring up the US Whose Line since it's also one of my top favourites. You've covered a lot of points on the US show, as well as the main actors that I agree with. I love that humanizing element of making mistakes and having fun with it. Even watching the outtakes are comical in itself, as if some mistakes would have just flowed with the show regardless. I also love how they joke about each other (Ryan's nose and shoes, Colin's baldness, etc). Now typically I'm not one for the song games, but they are still entertaining. And damn, I have to give them credit for their great improve talent! ...

@alanmills94923 years ago Hi Amanda, yes it's weird that they try to re-make shows like Fawlty Towers as they must think they can do it better ! I suspect that a show like Life on Mars only works because of the setting - the era and the country. I don't know what the US version is like but it must be a different show in many ways.
The Office probably works because the setting translates - the work experience is probably very similar.

@maxout73063 years ago You featured some great shows in alternatives and many thanks. I guess it's horses for courses?
As you may know, only 12 episodes were made of Fawlty Towers. Apparently John Cleese and associates felt they had set the bar too high for the value to be continued. It made me think that some say it's better to burn out than to rust.
    Thanks for sharing - Liked.

@Shaun_Garratt3 years ago Excellent video, can’t really argue with any of your choices. I love both versions of The Office. I prefer Ricky Gervais as the boss, but the US version was great for so many seasons and the ensemble cast was much more developed. Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie and other North American stars were regulars on the UK version every week and were always fun to watch. ... 2

@marksmith34643 years ago British comedy is far superior, more sophisticated, complex and much more subtle than US comedy. The humour just does not translate, remakes never work, the US Inbetweeners was crass, just terrible, I doubt if the UK version was shown in the US, if it was it would have been censored.

@Smudgie332 years ago The only two shows that I enjoyed both UK and US versions of were Being Human and Queer as Folk.
The reason I feel both the US versions were successful for both of these is that the storylines went further than the UK versions and the US characters were allow to develop independently. Once both shows had gone through their contractual UK storylines and started creating their own you quickly forgot they were remakes. ...

@AngelicDaemon3 years ago I’d encourage you to try ‘An Idiot Abroad’ with Carl Pilkington. Ricky Gervais and his The Office co-writer Stephen Merchant have a friend called Carl who hates travel so they thought it would be fun to send him on ‘trips of a lifetime’ and film him complaining about it all. There are a couple of series and they are hilarious and very ‘British’ in their travel attitude. ... 1
