@EverythingIsPhotogeniclast yearIts important to note that 4-5 decibels is actually substantially quieter as with every 10 decibels comes a perceived doubling of loudness. The logarithmic nature of decibel measurement can be tricky. Also, the frequency/type of sound is something to consider. The sound of wind could be the same volume as crinkling a bag of potato chips, however the sound itself is less bothersome to most. ...91

@tylerreeves8026last yearSide note about thermal camera test... cool idea but definitely not accurate. heck it tells you next to nothing. BUT there is a simple fix you can do for the next video to make it really useful! Therma camera don't really measure temperature, they measure IR output, which is dependent on a materials emissivity (or that's how I understand it, someone please chime in and correct me if i'm wrong). For future videos, to ensure your comparing apples to apples, put some electrical tape on both the pads in the areas you are interested in. This will keep the emissivity values between both pads the same (in the areas with tape) so you can actually make a real comparison that is representative of the thermal bridging between the top of the pad and the floor. It's not a perfect setup, but way more insightful then just pointing the camera at two different pads with potential different material/surface finish properties spoofs the thermal camera into reading different temperature values. ...32

@trevorhill157711 months agoMats with transverse tubing will tend to convect away more heat than longitudinal tubing. This doesn't show up in the testing methods. Convective heat transfer occurs in the opposite direction to gravity, and definitely not from cold ground up to the warm sleeper. However, when lying on and compressing a sleeping mat, the base of the warm sleeper is lower than the edge of the mat, and for mats with transverse tubing, convective heat loss is significant due to the short distances involved. This is much less of a problem in mats with longitudinal tubing, the distances involved being much greater. Neither Exped or Thermarest have picked up on this. ...1

@
@AdmiralTymothysLootChestlast yearDecibels are on a logarithmic scale, so they work like this: a 3 decibel increase is a doubling in volume, and a 3 decibel decrease is a halving in volume. So 4-5 decibel decrease is actually a hell of a drop in volume. 1

@dustinnagy6011last yearThe only add I haven’t skipped in years. Great job!

@iloveyouhamburgerslast yearYou know the decibel scale is a logarithmic scale right? A 3 decibel decrease means halving the energy levels of the sound. Therefore a reduction of 4 to 5 decibels is still quite substantial. 52

@tomnoyb8301last year83% reduction is equal to 7.7dB reduction. An easy way to remember the conversion is that every 3dB is a factor of two and every 10dB is a factor of ten. dB's may seem confusing, but are a simple way to work with large numbers. Earthquakes are likewise in dB's (dB/10 to be precise). An 8.0 earthquake is a hundred-times as powerful as a 6.0. A quiet room might be 20dBA, while an Xlite might be 70dBA - 100,000-times more noisy? Thus, big numbers lose meaning, and dB's start to make sense. ...1
@
@AdventuresofGraywolflast yearSound is on a dB scale, which is logarithmic. 2dB is about 63% quieter, so probably within the margin of error considering the differences in measurement. For reference, 3dB is twice a reference volume and -3dB is half. That being said, I would have rather seen them measure inside a tent to see what sounds reflect more back to the mic that resonate with that system. ...1

@TaylorPassofarolast yearTheory about the Big Agnes Zoom Pad. The ASTM test measures R value between two static surfaces, but in reality, people roll about at night. @edolson418611 months agoI love my Ospey Exos Pro 55. Please compare to Gregory Focus with its superior compression strap system. I performed some permanent mods to my Exos Pro decoupling the compression straps from the hip belt and permanently routing under/inside stretchy side pockets...compression still functional but now I have full access and full expansion of side pockets even when cinching down the bottom compression straps. I can still put long items compressed in side pockets if I choose now all functioning equally well as Gregory Focal. Leaving compression straps attached to hipbelt is problematic and unnecessary. Load transfer works equally well without this attachment. I also detached upper compression straps from upper corners of the large stretchy front pocket moving over to a side loop so compression is still functional but now allowing full access to large front pocket even when under maximum compression. A few other mods were done with optional removable sleeping pad straps to bottom and top of the pack improving the overall design and making this pack perfect. The permanent mods actually reduced pack weight a few grams by use of slightly shorter compression strap lengths. ...

@
@larsbijl3300last yearFor the Zoom, it's probably the same problem the etherlight has, The air inside the pad is allowed to move, from bottom to top. That means that the cooler air at the bottom will mix with the warmer air at the top, every time you move. That doesn't show up in these kinds of tests, or test environments where the dummy doesn't move, so the Etherlight is also rated way to high. ...1

@krkhanslast yearGrabbed the Exos Pro 55 but worried it's a bit too light for my taste. Mostly worried the hipbelt/padding will become an issue midtrip. TBF this is compared to my current AG 65 so totally justifiable considering the weight savings but the 30lb comfort rating is also a concern as I would need to really optimize my load to hit that mark. Been looking at the new Atmos LT 65 as an at least lighter weight option. Sturdier materials for seemingly better pack longevity and cuts all the frills I don't use on my AG 65 anyway. Seems the LT 65 isn't getting much attention yet though, hard to find anything beyond Osprey's own videos and the section hiker review. ...1

Even if he measures 5dBA decrease, (the 83% ish they claim) it will only be perceived as a bit quieter.
