This is what you should know if you are moving to Singapore from USA or Europe. Singapore is one of the best cities in the world for expats, but there are some weird habits that you will most probably pick up after living in Singapore for some time. In the beginning, I found them super strange, but now they are very natural to me. If you've never been to Singapore, you will be shocked when you hear some of them! Ok, let's go! Leaving shoes outside an apartment. Only in Singapore, I obtain a habit of leaving shoes outside. So if you are a shoe thief collector, then Singapore is the best place for you! I stopped bringing an umbrella with me when going outside. In Singapore, you expect to have an umbrella as your best friend. But no. Firstly because it's useless for Singapore rain - most of the time it's not a normal rain - it's a shower! So an umbrella will not help. Secondly, because there are many roofs over pathways, you will find your shelter if the rain started. And thirdly - most of the rains here last 20 minutes or so, so you can wait it out. Calling taxi drivers Uncle, though I'm not a nephew of all the taxi drivers in Singapore. The general unspoken rule is to address new people, aunty or uncle, especially when telling something to your kids. That sounded weird to me in the beginning, but now I even find it sweet. Not saying hi to people in the elevator. This is a bit tricky. By default, you are not supposed to say hi. But you can do it occasionally if you catch someone's eye. So basically, not saying hi in the elevator or at the narrow footpath is not perceived to be rude. Asking the same question 100% of times when you meet new people, especially foreigners: So, how long have you been living in Singapore? I guess it's because Singapore's nature is a mix of different people of different nations who come here. Here are a lot of expats. The next one is I'm not checking the weather forecast anymore. In all the other locations where I used to live, I did it every day. But not in Singapore. The weather forecast is always saying 30 degrees Celsius (which is 86 degrees Fahrenheit) and rain with thunder, but it's just not true! I don't know how it works, but normally you can have like 20 min of heavy rain but the sun rest of the day. The next weird habit is to avoid being outside in the afternoon. You are waiting for a warm day in other countries and heading outside as soon as it happens. But not in Singapore. Too hot during the day! So you tend to take a walk in the morning or after 5 pm. This point is on the other side of the previous one. Bringing your jacket and warm socks when going to the cinema! Otherwise, you'll be frozen to death. But the best part which I love is getting out of the cinema at night and dive into the warm Singapore air. Amazing! Using tissue paper to reserve a seat at a food court or a cafe. You just throw it on a table and go to order your food. Moreover, you can use anything for this purpose - water bottle, access card, sometimes I even use my phone. And it's not been stolen yet. This is one of the real reasons to live in Singapore! :) To build on it I actually leave my laptop on a table in a cafe to go to a restroom. It's crazy how you become so chilled about safety here. I need to completely forget this habit of leaving valuable staff anywhere before going to Europe. If you are local, please share if you are like me afraid to leave safe and cozy Singapore and let me know if anything of what I just said makes sense. And do watch another video on this channel.
