Unheard Sirens: Minneapolis Tornado Special, 1986 KARE 11

One of the most unique perspectives of a tornado was broadcast live on television from a traffic helicopter by KARE 11 on the afternoon of July 18, 1986. While it was not the first tornado to be broadcast live from a helicopter, the dynamic vortex made international news and boosted ratings for the Minneapolis/St. Paul affiliate NBC affiliate. The video would go on to be featured in numerous educational and documentary programs about tornadoes. It aided atmospheric scientists in comparing actual vortex evolution verses physical models generated in a laboratory, and was decades before drone videography of tornadoes became more common.
