Four Catholic bishops who are Cuban-American say they support the ongoing protests in the island nation of Cuba against its Communist government. In a statement on Tuesday, the Church leaders said in part, "The right and courage of the people in Cuba to raise their voice publicly, casting away their fear of repression and revealing authentic solidarity as a people, are acknowledged and applauded." The statement is signed by Archbishop Nelson Perez of Philadelphia, Bishop Felipe Estevez of St. Augustine, Bishop Manuel Cruz, Auxiliary Bishop of Newark, and Bishop Octavio Cisneros, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Brooklyn. Executive Director of the Catholic News Agency's ACI Group, Alejandro Bermudez, joins to give us the latest on the protests happening in the US and whether they are helping the people in Cuba. With more than half of the people in Cuba being Catholic, Bermudez shares what role the Church has played in the country and whether it has had any influence on what we are seeing now. The four bishops in the US mentioned a Catholic priest who had been arrested and allegedly tortured. Bermudez shares what he knows about Father Castor Álvarez, his condition and whether there are any updates. The executive director for the ACI group discusses what he thinks will happen next in the country with its Communist government and the uprising of the people.
