Terrifying moment New York City's Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge appears to 'breathe' as it rises up and down amid extreme winds - forcing officials to close roadway down. Terrifying videos show how the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York City appeared to breathe by rising up and down amid extreme wind conditions that led officials to shut it down on Monday. New York was battered by intense winds and a deluge of rain on Monday that led MTA bridge officials to shut down the Verrazzano bridge, which connects the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn, at 2.30pm. The bridge's upper level was first closed around 10am due to 'high wind conditions' and officials banned all empty trucks and tractor trailer vehicles from traveling across, before the lower level was shut down as well. New York City's Fire Wire Twitter page shared shocking video showing the Verrazzano bridge perilously float up and down as if it was breathing while surrounded by thick, gray fog. Other videos shared to social media show the path of the 13,700-foot-long suspension bridge, which is the longest in the city, making loud creaking noises as it undulated in the whipping winds, creating momentary bumps in the normally smooth, straight road.
