@theparodymonster13 years ago "grappling" is an umbrella term that BJJ falls under. Wrestling also falls under this term.
They are not the same but they are both grappling

@BrandonGiordano3 years ago Modern jiu jitsu has evolved to kind of just be "submission grappling" a little bit of everything. As it should be 328

@mraBJJ333 years ago I like the mentality of "the more the merrier" in jiu-jitsu. The wrestlers coming over to help the sport evolve even more and get more and more exciting is what I'd love to watch. 200
  • @
@firegate63163 years ago We will evolve out of “Brazilian Jiu Jitsu” into the umbrella sport GRAPPLING.
A hybrid combat discipline which encompasses the best of every grappling art.
The same way leg-locks have evolved, so will takedowns. In 10-15 years GRAPPLING will surpass pure wrestling.

@alvarezgamers3 years ago I wrestled in school and now a brown belt in BJJ. I can say for sure. Wrestling is the toughest thing I’ve ever done. Workouts are no joke. 24

@maxiboii55183 years ago These guys are obsessed with this question, because they refuse to train both. You can only be relegated to one style and are confined to it's rules says them. Like wtf a wrestler who comes into BJJ is only still a wrestler? This is why MMA is best, least amount of limitations ... 19

@thomasdavis86003 years ago Grappling is a general term that encompasses many styles. “It” can’t be better than wrestling. It is wrestling. 122

@alandoyle20823 years ago Wrestling is pushing, bjj is pulling, you need both, but the tribalism makes it rare for one person to master both 72
  • @
@wizal2123 years ago If you want to combine both styles, guard pulling should be -2 and the match starts standing. This way top position prioritized since the top person usually wins if striking was involved. However, there you can get caught from the top with submission ... 25

@mohammadnashitsiddiqui21682 years ago I feel this is why many mma gyms are now doing grappling courses, to give a blend of both, ofcourse it's better to be focused on either one. @SIickTurtIe3 years ago Great feature, but I’m surprised that there wasn’t a third and final segment that involved the transition of either sport into the current MMA scene. It just seems that the drive, mindset and athletic prowess of top level wrestlers combined with fundamental BJJ/submission defense is a better base these days than let’s say a BJJ Blackbelt learn takedowns. There are always exceptions, but this seems to be the current trend. ... 39

@aldojitsu3 years ago Did no one ever seriously consider a catch wrestling rule set for jiujiteiros vs wrestlers? You can win by either pin or submission and I believe there's a takedown and reversal based scoring system? 14
  • @
@ironsurvival70113 years ago Special rules don’t show who’s better or what style is better. The rules should simply be, takedowns legal, submissions legal, maybe a time limit but definitely no stalling or passivity. Wrestling and Jiu Jitsu are arts that fall under the umbrella of grappling. The reason Jiu Jitsu is better as a combat art is because the end goal is submission which ends the fight. In a life and death combative situation you definitely want more than a hold or a pin in your arsenal. Choking a person unconscious or breaking a limb is pretty effective ... 2

@andrewgrignon826last year Since I started in wrestling in highschool, then started Jiu Jitsu in my 40's, I can say the hardest thing about transitioning was to learn to be ok going on my back. Where in JJ, being pinned on your back is ok and a form of most guys games, being in guard I mean ...

I am new to jitsu i watch the ufc since first event one but never got to dive into grappling or mexican ground karate i have played soccer hockey and basketball ufc but i live in a small town where there is zero jiu jitsu gyms but i think the wrestling vs jitsu could be a good place where they could do a first to 50 points wins or something they both agreed to ...

@toughfff7123 years ago There is no perfect rule set, for a show down. You will always see the wrestler being better at take downs, and BJJ being able to grab a submission. It is their strengths. Anything that reduces or limits those strengths, will water down the bout making it boring. ... 1

@walkingcorpse12243 years ago Wrestling is a form of grappling. Jiu Jitsu is now sort of a jack of all trades grappling Martial Art, however, what makes arts such as Sambo, Catch As Catch Can and Judo stand out are the rulings. Personally I think Sambo is the best grappling art, followed by Jiu Jitsu and then Catch As Catch Can, otherwise everything else from Wrestling to Judo to Bokh is just something to add to ur repitoire in the arts of Sambo, Catch and Jits, that's what makes grappling so interesting, but yes these grappling arts' rulings are where the differences and the players lie. ... 4

@IphigeniaAtAulis3 years ago To me, wrestling is just a form of grappling, just like jiu-jitsu is a form of grappling. If you think about it, it's like saying which is better, Ford or Chevy. There are definitely some people who will defend to the death one being better than the other, but ultimately if you think about it, they are both cars and will both get you from point A to point B. ... 1

@suplexedlast year Allow leg locks and guard pulls, but if wrestler ecapes guard and stands up, match resets standing. Wrestler has a chance of winning by takedown points or by pinning, jiujitsu player has a good chance of winning by submission. Both athletes are able to use their entire offensive arsenal. I don't see how it's that complicated to come up with a good ruleset. ...

@macleod15923 years ago I think the answer is both. Wrestling is the best at controlling their opponent's body but since there are no submissions, they can't finish. So you take wrestling to control the opponent and BJJ to finish them and you have the perfect art. ... 1

@sbag112 years ago I guess to each his own, but for me, the ultimate ruleset was NHB. In terms of competition, for me, the whole point to whatever style you practice -- wrestling, jiu-jitsu, karate, boxing, muay thai, etc. -- is to be maximally effective in a one-on-one, empty-hand, who's-the-man fight to the finish (incapacitation of opponent) with referee interference, no rounds, and no time limits. So, whatever style, set of techniques, approach -- whatever you want to call it -- that is the best in true NHB, is the best, period. ...

@anthonysiu60103 years ago you can't please both either the wrestler learns more submissions and defense. by not allowing guard pulling (or sitting down is negative points) or leglocks you're just dilluting the sport. This might sound crazy but if you make takedowns score more (3? Pins 4 points) than the position scores (pass guard, mount and back takes) and heres the crazy part... submissions could score (5?) with a limit to 3 per match then you automatically win. ...

It is like mixing freestyle wrestling(freestyle wrestling actually EVOLVED FROM CATCH WRESTLING) with submission wrestling. And before you think of "fake" fights(ie pro wrestling) there is ALSO LEGIT CATCH WRESTLING COMPETITIONS. As in the Snake Pit Wigan(original gym for catch wrestling)catch wrestling world championship. Or even the Snake Pit USA catch wrestling world championship. Feet to back 4
    Ippon 4
    Wazi Ari 2
    All others no score
If you pull gaurd your opponent can slam, no spiking on top of head.
If you jump gaurd… you can be slammed out of it or…. Your opponent can walk you out of bounds. You can try to grapple

I always thought grappling meant physical combat without striking, like punching or kicking. The prime example is MMA/ UFC, where most successful people are the ones with wrestling background. But a mix of both is necessary, I'm convinced that bjj guys needs to learn wrestling. Because look at the match of gordan ryan exposing his back just to get taken down, so that they could groundfight because his stand up game is basically bad. That's why I'm going to practice wrestling to improve my bjj game. ...
