SPEAKER: Simon Soon __ Join co-curator, Simon Soon, on a virtual tour of ILHAM’s current exhibition: Bayangnya itu Timbul Tenggelam. He provides the backstory behind the logic of the timeline, the process of mapping photo studios in Malaya and shares a more nuanced outlook on the photographs of Orang Asli life that were originally published in a two-volume compendium entitled ‘Pagan Races of the Malay Peninsula’ (1906). — Simon Soon is a senior lecturer in art history at the Cultural Centre, University of Malaya. His broader areas of interest include comparative modernities in the arts, urban histories, and art historiography. He is also an editorial member of Southeast of Now: Directions in Contemporary and Modern Art in Asia, and a team member of the Malaysia Design Archive, a repository, education and research platform on visual cultures of the 20th century.
