IMPORTANT: Kapalabhati should be practised on an empty stomach. It should be avoided during pregnancy.
'Kapala' in Sanskrit means skull and 'bhati' means shining, so 'kapalabhati' means a shining face, which is a reflection of healthy internal machinery of the body. Kapalabhati is a breathing technique and is one of the 6 cleansing kriyas (Shat Kriyas). There is tremendous energy stored in the solar plexus or the Manipura chakra located behind the navel. With the practice of Kapalabhati we tap this dormant energy and it spreads to the whole body, promoting vitality and good health.
In Kapalabhati, the exhalation is active whereas the inhalation is passive. Between two exhalations, one inhalation takes place automatically. We do not force the inhalation. So, when you begin the practice of Kapalabhati, you inhale deeply and consciously for the first time; after that, it is only the exhalation that is forceful and controlled. On the exhalation, pull the abdomen forcefully and completely in towards the spine and when the abdomen is released after forceful exhalation, there is an automatic flow of breath into the lungs. As a beginner, one may practise 3 rounds of Kapalabhati with 60-80 pumpings. Practice must be stopped if there is tiredness in the body and resumed after 2-3 breaths or when the body is ready again. After every round of Kapalabhati, hold the breath briefly or take a couple of deep breaths.
