Labor Day has been celebrated worldwide every May 1 for as long as I can remember. Today has been made even more memorable because our auntie's sow gave birth to 14 healthy piglets! Nanganak ang inahing baboy ni auntie! The first of May literally turned into LABOR DAY for this household! A sow or inahing baboy (Tagalog)/takong (Ilocano) is an asset to a lot of hog raisers in the province. Piglet prices are erratic and inconsistent, so having your own sow to produce piglets for fattening or gilt production is more economical in the long run. Usually, a sow is made to produce seven litters before they are culled — but through proper nutrition and management, they can be utilised for a longer period of time.
