Another fun subject in English. Empty verbs perform a few different jobs in English. In simple terms, empty verbs replace other verbs. Empty verbs are used as part of a phrase as well. Native English speakers often convey the same message two different ways. Common empty verbs are have, give or take, make, do and get. As empty verbs have no meaning they are commonly used to help describe certain activities. Collocated word combinations use certain empty verbs to explain or describe an action or fact. Here are some examples with empty verbs. I'm having a party Friday. Now I could say I'm planning a party, or I'm scheduling a party, I could do that. But I am "having" it's a little more natural. And again, "have" is an empty verb. You have a car. It means you own a car. I could say, you own a car or you have a car. They're both correct. Have is your empty verb. We have coffee in the mornings, or we drink coffee in the mornings. I can do either one have is your empty verb. Time for a short! What's a short? A grammar fact. What's a verb? A verb is a state, action or feeling. They gave me an award, or they awarded me with something. That sounds funny doesn't it? They awarded me with an award. Sometimes we use hot verbs, so we don't use the same word over and over. He gives blood at the hospital or he donates blood at the hospital. She gave me a sandwich. She served me a sandwich. It takes great photos. The camera works well. I take a bath every night or I bathe every night. You need to make up your mind or Hey! You need to decide. You need to decide. Make a decision of some kind. We made a complaint at the shop or we complained they did some shopping. They went shopping or they shopped. He does the cooking every night. He cooks or prepares dinner. So he does the cooking does or the verb "do" is an empty verb. She does yoga three times a week. To practice. She practices yoga three times a week. Do yoga is a natural collocation. It is colloquial speech. "Do" is commonly used with actions. Make is commonly used when we create something. It gets excited at feeding time. "To be" happy. The examples I've just used are just a few ideas. Empty verbs should be studied and learned with simple examples. and everyday English! Phrases are full of empty verbs. Remember that phrases can both be literal and idiomatic. In other words, literal phrases often describe an action or state.
