How to Add Colored Background to Portraits in Photoshop & Lightroom

Open an image in Photoshop that you need to apply the effect. duplicate background layer. convert layer to smart object. Now open image in camera raw filter. If you are using lightroom, just follow the same and adjust the settings as follows Simply create a new adjustment brush layer adjust tint and temperature sliders to get desired color. adjust contrast and saturation to change color intensity. select size and feather of the brush. now paint on background to add the color. there is a check box at the bottom of the brush panel labeled Auto Mask. By turning this feature on it detect the edges within your image. By using Auto Mask I was easily able to apply color only to background, and it doesn't effect her hair or skin tones.
